Raise Brave Girls Published Madukoma Ogechi Story. – African ChangeMakers
My Background
I am Madukoma Ogechi(Nee Egwumba), I am the second child and the first daughter in a family of 4 children, I have 2 surviving siblings. I was born and I grew up in Ajegunle, an area known as one of the slums in Lagos Nigeria. I attended public primary and secondary schools. I attended N.U.D Pry School in Ajegunle and Expressway Secondary School, Tolu School Complex also in Ajegunle. Tolu School Complex was known for it’s notorious activities, a complex/compound that has 15 different Secondary schools and 4 different primary schools all in one complex/compound.
My parents at the time couldn’t afford to send me to a university so I picked up a Job with one of the security companies in Lagos (Bemil Securities ) then where I worked as a contract security lady inorder to pay my way through school. I got admission into Ambrose University, Ekpoma part time program here in Lagos where I studied and graduated in 2009 with a degree in Economics.
My Dream
My dream is to see poverty completely eradicated in our community through the empowerment of women and the youth.
My dream is to give my children a better life, more qualitative education and better opportunities in life.
My dream is to see Glomajos Enterprises become an internationally known organisation with our brand Loryma becoming an household name.
My Struggles
I had so many Struggles in life to ensure that my Background does not become a limitation for me.
I worked as a security lady for about 2 years just to get myself a university education. Born in a place like Ajegunle where other young girls believe that they can sale what they have to get what they want, where so many young people don’t believe that they can make it in life legitimately, I worked from Monday to Friday and went to school Saturdays and Sundays, I was on the road every day of the week to achieve the future that I dream of, despite many temptations, I stood my ground.
From working as a security lady to working as a waitress to working as an attendant in a casino, to working as a store keeper in another hotel, all to earn a legitimate income, today, I am the M.D/CEO of Glomajos Enterprises.
Glomajos Enterprises is an indigenous manufacturing company that produces and sale household cleaning products. Our brand name is LORYMA. We have three products in the market so far, approved by NAFDAC.
Our products include; Loryma toilet bowl cleaner, Loryma Liquid Detergent and Loryma Laundry bar soap.
The struggle was real but it paid off, did I mention that I have had to hawk several items from pure-water (when it used to be tied in nylon and called iced water) to bread to so many other things just to assist my parent to put food on our table.
My Advise
My charge to you young girls is to note that the type of family you were born into shouldn’t be a limitation, it shouldn’t stop you from pursuing your dream, you have great potential inside of you, nothing can stop you except you stop yourself. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, you have all you need to succeed within you, with determination and hard work, you too can live your dream, don’t give in to peer pressure or advances from older men, if I can get to this point though not my destination yet, you can do better.
One thing you have to start doing is read, read, read and read. Reading helped me in no small way, not only did it help open and broaden my mind, it helped my vocabulary. I was an ardent reader, as a young girl then, even when my parents cannot afford to buy me all the books, I will collect from my friends, read it before them and return back to them. My dear young girl, you are brave, you are smart, you can make it.
Thank you and God bless you.
