I am Ahmed Abba Umar President of the Association for Progressive African Youth AJAP-NIG, African ChangeMakers Mentee Cohort 1, 2020.First of all, I would like to congratulate all of the 2020 ACi Mentees here including myself for finally graduating. Every end has a new beginning, today might be the last day for our mentorship program but I believe our learning will actually start from today.  I was excited but at the same time a little scared of the new reality. I was prepared to learn, explore, make new friends and get to know me as an individual self. Before, there was always someone to guide me, my former teachers in schools, my elders and my Mentors. But here I was starting a journey where I set the rules and guided myself. I’m very happy for selecting me as part of 2020 ACi Mentorship today as I stand here, I am proud to be part of you.

The good experiences that I got here of course does not imply that I did not have to face my share of discomfort and challenge, but its these challenges that has made me a stronger and more confident person today. Every little encounters and experiences gained here has been enriching and will remain within my memories for life long.

Talking from a graduating perspective, I believe the stories created beyond the boundaries of the African ChangeMakers Mentorship have been equally helpful to all of us. Everyone here has had their own share of excitement and stories that they will carry along their life. As a 2020 African ChangeMakers Mentee, I have had a very different experience. The teaching style, the lectures, were very different from what I had experienced before, and therefore for the first week of my mentorship, I was still a confused soul. I didn’t really understand the procedure, even though I am always going through the program, initial challenge was always to submit my assignment. I was late almost every week to submit my assignment. But one of my friend always try his best to guide on how to do it.

The best thing about the mentorship is that they let you choose your own speed; you are not judged by the scores in your grade-sheet. The various current-issue studies, the case works, group works the research projects, the assignments, each were helping me develop skills, which of-course at that time I wasn’t ready to accept. The networking group was helping me practically implement my knowledge. Participating in the African Change Makers mentorship program has been nothing less than amazing. I couldn’t even believe that I had gotten in when I first got the acceptance and invite e-mail. In the space of four weeks, I have learnt about concepts that I had never known about and these concepts are very beneficial in putting one’s career and social choices into an aligned perspective. My testimony for this awesome intensive four weeks’ capacity building. I must confess, after reading through the week one module, I was wow. This is a really good content, that made me yearn for more in the coming weeks. I personally read through the modules every Saturday since I am normally busy with work activities. My experience with the first week, our one profiler stipulated I am an entrepreneur, which was true. I have learned so much from this program. My networking skills has been improved and I have had great contacts with my fellow participants (mentees) getting to know each other more. With respect to the graduate school or professional course. I have made my decision to undertake a professional course to leverage my career. And lastly, the Curriculum vitae, cover letter and thank you notes have really opened up on me.
