What is WASA?
Watoto Africa Soccer Awards is arguably the biggest annual football festival coast region of Kenya. Since 2012, WASA has hosted a series of tournaments and Gala Awards bringing together over 60,000 young boys and girls from the ages of 6 to 18 years. During the gala ceremonies outstanding players and winning teams are recognized and awarded. This year we hope to hit the 70,000 mark. This year alone we are hosting 63 tournaments in the months of April, May and December. Our Mission: WASA platform not all keeps young people busy and away from social evils like drug abuse, crime, radicalization and early sexual encounters but also offers talent development. Organized grass root structures like WASA are synonymous with talent development. There is a need to support such fun, structured and competitive football programs for talented young players within the country. We also deliver vital messages for social development among youth. This year because Kenya is going into elections, our theme is embracing cultural diversity for peaceful co-existence. Lastly we provide space for youth to grow various interests like journalism, event management, photography, and video coverage, MCs, and refereeing. Our challenges: Our success has been our biggest challenge, because WASA has become a very popular event, every child wants to take part. This means that our budget grows bigger each year. In as much as we credit our success to the corporates and well-wishers, we need a lot of support. Our dreams: We want every child to experience the magic of playing the WASA games by taking it to different parts of Kenya as well as other East African countries already Uganda has taken it positively after we there launched last year. We also want to set up soccer centers for talented players in areas where WASA takes place.
