To commemorate the day to Ending Obstetric Fistula, ACWN presents a Tweet Chat on: Ending Obstetric Fistula
Obstetric Fistula is an abnormal opening between the birth canal and another organ (bladder or rectum) and is a serious maternal morbidity. Women who experience obstetric fistula suffer fecal incontinence, discrimination and social segregation.
Contributing factors includes: prolonged or obstructed labour, young age at first birth, lack of access to quality maternal healthcare, unsafe cesarean section, poverty, illiteracy, female genital mutilation, sexual violence, infection, status of women and gender discrimination and so on.
While there has been significant progress in treating fistula globally, a lot needs to be done especially in countries with poor healthcare facilities. Total eradication is not impossible and requires addressing underlying issues and improving access to high quality and maternal healthcare.
